British football performance staff survey

28 May 2025

“On average, practitioners in the EPL were paid £6.3k, £19k*, and £21.8k* more than practitioners in the Championship, League One & League Two respectively.”

The digital age, particularly platforms like social media, is rife with strength and conditioning coaches and sports scientists expressing their grievances. Yet, until this report, there was a dearth of empirical evidence to validate or refute these widespread sentiments. This report sought to fill that gap, probing into aspects like age, experience, education, gender, employment methods, accreditations, and, crucially, salary.

The survey, completed by 138 practitioners working as strength and conditioning coaches or sports scientists in first-team football across England, Scotland, and Wales, offers a comprehensive snapshot of the industry. The respondents spanned various leagues, from the English Premier League to the Welsh Premier League.

Geographical differences in pay were minimal, with practitioners in England, Scotland, and Wales having comparable salaries. However, distinctions emerged when comparing different leagues and roles. For instance, practitioners in the English Premier League commanded higher salaries than their counterparts in the Championship, League One, and League Two.

In conclusion, this report is a clarion call for increased transparency in the industry.
